How to Download YouTube Shorts on Mac and Windows

Downloading a Short on a computer is the easiest version of this task: no clipboard permissions, no Files app, no gallery scanner. Paste, click, done. Here is the process on macOS and Windows, plus the desktop-only tricks worth knowing.

The short version

1. Copy the Short's URL from your browser's address bar.
2. Open ShortsDL, paste it, press Download.
3. Click Download MP4 or Download MP3.
4. The file appears in your browser's downloads folder.

Copying the link on desktop

While a Short is playing, its URL is right there in the address bar — youtube.com/shorts/VIDEOID. Select it and copy. Alternatively, click Share below the video and then Copy in the dialog.

If you clicked into a Short from a channel's Shorts tab, make sure the address bar shows /shorts/ and an ID rather than the tab listing. Copying a Shorts link covers the edge cases.

Downloading

Paste into the box on ShortsDL and press Download — or just hit Enter. The result card shows the thumbnail, title, channel, duration and a quality badge, normally 1080p.

Click Download MP4 for video with sound, or Download MP3 for the audio at 192 kbps.

The first time on a given browser, the status reads Preparing converter… while a 32 MB component downloads once. On a desktop connection this takes a few seconds. It is cached afterwards, so subsequent downloads start immediately.

You will then see the two streams come down, a brief Merging…, and Done with the finished size.

Where the file goes

• macOS: ~/Downloads by default. Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge all use it unless you have changed the setting. Safari may show the download in the toolbar's downloads popover.
• Windows: C:\Users\<you>\Downloads. Chrome and Edge show a downloads bubble in the toolbar; Ctrl+J opens the full list.

Files are named from the Short's title with the resolution appended, so a folder of them stays sortable.

Saving several Shorts in a row

There is no queue, but the flow is quick enough that it does not matter. After a download finishes, click Download another Short, paste the next link, and go. The converter stays loaded in the tab, so each subsequent Short only takes as long as the streams need.

Keeping a couple of browser tabs open lets you overlap: paste in one while another merges.

Browsers and versions

Anything current works: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi. The in-browser converter needs WebAssembly, which every browser released in the last several years supports.

Where it can fail is a locked-down corporate browser or an aggressive extension that blocks WebAssembly. If that happens, ShortsDL says HD is unavailable and falls back to a direct 360p download instead of leaving you with nothing.

Why not just use a desktop app?

Desktop downloaders and command-line tools do the same job and can batch far better. The trade-off is installation, updates, and trusting an executable. A browser tool needs none of that, and because the merging happens locally, the privacy story is the same: the finished file is assembled on your machine and never uploaded anywhere.
