How to Download YouTube Shorts on iPhone (No App Needed)
Save YouTube Shorts to your iPhone with Safari — where the file goes, how to move it into Photos, and how to get the audio as MP3. No app, no shortcut, no login.
iOS makes saving a video from the web feel harder than it is. Files land in an app you might not use often, and the Photos app is not the default destination. Here is the complete route, using nothing but Safari.
The short version
- Copy the Shorts link from the YouTube app's Share → Copy link.
- Open ShortsDL in Safari and tap Paste, then Download.
- Tap Download MP4.
- Confirm the download when Safari asks.
- Open Files → Downloads, tap the video, share it, and choose Save Video.
That is it. The rest of this guide explains each step and the things that trip people up.
Step 1: Copy the link
In the YouTube app, tap the Share arrow on the right-hand side of the Short and choose Copy link. Do not tap a messaging app by mistake — the icons sit close together. If you are on the YouTube website in Safari instead, just copy the URL from the address bar.
Step 2: Paste it on ShortsDL
Open ShortsDL in Safari and tap the Paste button next to the input box. iOS will ask for permission to read the clipboard the first time; allow it, or long-press the field and paste manually.
Tap Download. The result card appears with the thumbnail, title, channel and a quality badge.
Step 3: Download
Tap Download MP4 for the video, or Download MP3 if you only want the sound.
The first time, the status may read Preparing converter… while a one-off 32 MB component loads. This is what lets your iPhone join YouTube's separate video and audio streams locally, which is how you get 1080p with sound rather than a silent file or a soft 360p one. It is cached afterwards.
Then you will see the streams download in megabytes, a brief Merging…, and Done.
Step 4: Confirm Safari's download
Safari asks "Download [filename]?" — tap Download. A blue download arrow appears in the address bar or toolbar showing progress.
If nothing happens when you tap the button, check that downloads are not blocked: Settings → Safari → Downloads should point at either iPhone Storage or iCloud Drive.
Step 5: Move it into Photos
By default the file goes to the Files app, not to your camera roll.
- Open Files.
- Go to Downloads — under On My iPhone or iCloud Drive, depending on your setting.
- Tap the video to check it plays.
- Tap the Share icon, then Save Video.
It now appears in Photos, in your camera roll, ready to edit or post.
MP3 files behave differently: there is no "Save Audio" for the Photos app. Keep the MP3 in Files, or open the Share sheet and send it to a music app that accepts imports.
Which iOS versions work
Safari on iOS 15 and later handles all of this without any extra setup. Chrome, Edge and Firefox on iOS are all Safari underneath, so they behave the same way.
On much older iPhones, the in-browser converter may fail to start. When that happens ShortsDL notices, tells you HD is unavailable on this browser, and falls back to a direct 360p download that needs no conversion at all. You still get a file — just a smaller one.
Common problems
"The Paste button does nothing." iOS clipboard permission was denied. Long-press the input field and choose Paste instead.
"The download is stuck at Preparing converter." That is the 32 MB one-off component on a slow connection. Give it a moment on Wi-Fi; it only happens once.
"I can't find the file." Files → Browse → Downloads. If Downloads is empty, check Settings → Safari → Downloads to see which location is selected.
"The video won't save to Photos." Photos only accepts video and image files. Confirm you downloaded the MP4 rather than the MP3.
